We Win!!!

We Win!!! The Minister of Service Alberta answered this week that landlords will not be permitted to use heat metering devices unless the devices are certified by Measurement Canada. I first raised this issue after the March 2008 election after constituents brought it to my attention. 18 months, two unanswered letters to Stratacon, a number of questions raised by me in Question Period and we got it!

Heat Metering was an issue that cut across issues dealing with consumer and tenant protection as well as environmental concerns. This measuring tool which has been used by landlords since spring of 2008 had absolutely no regulation, and therefore no tenant protection.

In a press release by Service Alberta, if heat metering is used it must be transparent for tenants and the measuring devices must be certified by Measurements Canada.

My advocacy of this issue since last year has forced to the government to enact regulation to protect tenants.

Thank you to the Edmonton Centre constituents who brought this issue to me. According to the tip sheet "The new regulation applies despite any contract, whether made before or after the coming into force of this regulation."

I will be insuring that the government continues to protect tenants who are affected by Heat Metering.

Thank you Edmonton Centre.
